Here the criminals have guns, once I was buying some LSD in S.F. and some guy pulled a gun and robbed the guy we were about to buy it from. Then a couple of times someone has flashed their gun at me just to let me know that they have it.

It's not too big of a thing where I live to have a handgun, but rather, I think a lot of people have hunting rifles/ pellet guns/ target range guns, and w use them pretty much for that purpose alone. 2006-08-21 [zoloftzantac]: I found some data I thought was interesting. In 1994 there was a study that looked at over all of the gun related deaths they could find in the world.
They found:
143 out of every 1,000,000 people in the USA was killed by a gun in 1994.
4 per every 1,000,000 people in England was killed by a gun in 1994.
0.5 in every 1,000,000 people in the Japan was killed by a gun in 1994.
Then if you look at those countries policies about guns you see a clear trend.
In the USA people have a right to own guns and they are everywhere.
In England they are illegal and uncommon.
In Japan they are strictly illegal and the police often raid homes that are even suspected of having weapons.
In the USA you are about 300 times more likely to be killed by a gun then in Japan, but somehow we like to think we are safer because of our guns ...

The problem is, they give guns to every goddamn 18yr old who applies, not knowing who the person is or what kind of attitude they have. I think that people who have been arrested, for assault or battery or anything dangerous, should not be able to own one. and if they are arrested for those, they have their license and guns taken away.

2006-08-21 [zoloftzantac]: In the USA the ability to be a gun owner is treated pretty much the same as being able to vote, so the age is the same for both. It actually used to be 21 for both voting and owning a firearm, but then they changed both to 18 when they lowered the drafting age because they needed more bodies for the vietnam war ...
The general idea was that an 18 year old really isn't responsible enough to vote or own a firearm, and in many states they still can not drink alcohol, but they threw that out the window when they started running out of guys for their war.
Since people are innocent until proven guilty you can't ban them based on an arrest, but they are banned based on convictions for any felony, even in another state or if they are on probation for a conviction for a domestic violence, or if they are medicaly considered to be a danger to them selfs or others.

2006-08-22 [zoloftzantac]: That seems too high, that would mean that 0.61% of Americans die every year in a car wreak, or 1 in every 150 gets killed every year in a car accident. It isn't that bad here.
The statistics I find are 42815 traffic deaths in the USA in 2002, so for a 2002 USA population of 284.85 million that's about 148 traffic deaths per million people for that year, or 1 in every 6500 or so.
Traffic death rates and gun related death rates are pretty close here, and there has been some discussion about which rate is actually higher since it is easy to count things in differant ways to move the numbers a round a bit.
It is interesting to me that there are people who are not allowed to own a gun, or vote because they have proven their poor judgement and un-trustworthy
